One-on-One Tutoring

Do you need academic help? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Tutoring Beyond Borders offers 100% free tutoring services. Currently, our in-person services operate within the Region of Waterloo.

Please note that all of our tutoring lessons are to be carried out in English. All students who apply must make sure that they are comfortable with and conversant in the English language before applying.

To become a student, please follow these steps.

Please read through our policies to understand the do’s and don’ts of our tutoring program for both students and tutors.

TBB offers 100% free tutoring services. These services are provided one-on-one (one volunteer tutor and one student), and are limited to one hour per week per subject (one subject per student). Tutoring locations are public areas accessible to both the tutor and the student.

One of the Executive Team members will respond to your application informing you of whether a tutor has been found for you. If not, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified as soon as a tutor is available. Waiting list spots are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once a tutor has been found, a Match-Up Meeting will be arranged.

Our Match-Up Meeting is unique to TBB’s one-on-one tutoring services. We ask that the tutor, the student (and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s) if he/she is below 18 years of age), and a member of the Executive Team attend a meeting to introduce the student to the tutor. At this one-time, 15-20 minute meeting, the following topics will be discussed:

    • Introduction to Tutor
    • Introduction to Student
    • Subject Student Needs Help With
    • Course of Action to Take
    • Location, Day & Time of Weekly Tutoring Lesson
    • Exchange of Contact Information
    • Reminder of Policies
    • Question & Answer Period
    • Student Signs Consent Form (a.k.a. Student Waiver & Release of Liability Form)

A Match-Up is not complete without the student signing the Student Consent Form, and tutoring may not begin until this form is signed. Here is a copy of the Student Consent Form.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Match-Up, please contact the Admissions Branch of the Operations Department at

The start of the first lesson is to be decided upon at the Match-Up Meeting. Tutoring begins, and you will meet up with your tutor once a week for a maximum of one hour.

You, as the student, must keep your tutor updated on your progress and topic(s) to be discussed during tutoring lessons. Please contact your tutor (by e-mail or phone call) to let him/her know what you would like to discuss during a lesson so that both parties come prepared to the lesson and you can make the most of your tutoring session. Also keep in mind that you are responsible for bringing all relevant course material to the tutoring lessons.

Since TBB does not have her own place, we rely on all tutors and students to keep us updated on any issues regarding our tutoring services. There may be times when you are unable to contact your tutor, have issues with your tutor, would like to submit feedback, stop your tutoring program, etc. Please contact the TBB Student Support Team at 519-577-1467 or if any of these issues arise.

In case of emergencies, call 519-577-4822 or contact to reach all Executive Team members.

The acceptance of an application into the Tutoring Beyond Borders tutoring program is no guarantee for academic success at the conclusion of each tutoring session or program.
